My Photograph of the Day: Point Imperial Sunrise
Sunrise at Point Royal, north rim of the Grand Canyon.

My Photograph of the Day: Point Imperial Sunrise

The sun finally began to peak over the horizon, and I set up for this shot and waited for the sun to arise to the top of the pine tree at the rim. Now the Grand Canyon here looks very different from the other views further down the canyon. The rim here is far apart and the layers and layers of buttes and mesas seem endless.

My Photograph of the Day: Onto the Beach
Daybreak at Sandbridge Beach, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

My Photograph of the Day: Onto the Beach

As I have noted in other Photographs of the Day that I used to live in Virginia Beach, which meant that I would occasionally head out to the beach before daylight hoping to catch a colorful morning sunrise. I love heading to the beach during predawn, when the ocean is calm and peaceful, the waves are lapping along the shoreline,…

My Photograph of the Day: A Study in Purple
Purple and rose colored clouds at pre-dawn, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

My Photograph of the Day: A Study in Purple

What I love about sunrise - and it is the same here in Arizona in the desert - is how the colors of the rising sun reflect on the clouds. You can watch the colors travel across the sky and it is amazing to see.  This particular morning I really wanted to catch the clouds light up with the first light which often colors the clouds a beautiful purple before turning red and then orange and then finally yellow.

My Photograph of the Day: A New Day Dawns
A beautiful sunrise at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

My Photograph of the Day: A New Day Dawns

On this particular morning, it was chilly and there was no wind, which meant that I might be able to catch a nice sunrise. There were sufficient clouds in the sky to help add to the overall photograph I had envisioned in my head. I find that the quality of light is very different in the fall-winter-spring months as the sun is closer to the horizon for a longer time than during the late spring-summer-early fall months

My Photograph of the Day: Canyon Dawn
Looking west from Mather Point at sunrise, Grand Canyon National Park, south rim, Arizona.

My Photograph of the Day: Canyon Dawn

We were at the Grand Canyon, and went out early before dawn to Mather Point to catch the sunrise. It was a cold day and the wind was blowing something fierce. And when we arrived we found ourselves among a gaggle of tourist and photographers all vying for a glimpse of the sunrise to the East. [et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_4] Mather Point…

My Photograph of the Day: Mesa Arch Morning
Early morning pre-dawn at Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

My Photograph of the Day: Mesa Arch Morning

This was my first time at Mesa Arch. I had never been there, although I had seen Tom Till's photograph of the arch and I knew that I really wanted to take a similar photograph. And I knew instinctively that I would have to arrive early to ensure a good spot. We were staying in Moab, and having driven to…

My Photograph of the Day: Cherry Morning Path
Early morning cherry blossoms along the pathway near the tidal pool in Washington DC.

My Photograph of the Day: Cherry Morning Path

I left my home in Virginia Beach around 3 am. I was heading for the tidal pool area of Washington DC to capture some of the beauty of the cherry blossoms. After a several hour drive up I-95, I finally arrived. Parked the car and began my trek to the walkway around the tidal pool. Once I arrived, the pre-dawn…
