Waterholes Canyon is a slot canyon just south of Page Arizona on the Navajo Nation. This area by Lake Powell is known for it’s slot canyons. And to visit their requires two things, it requires a day-use pass from the Navajo Nation and it requires a good pair of hiking boots! Both of which I had on this particular day.

When your first come to Water Holes Canyon, from the parking lot just off state route 89, you find yourself hiking down into a wide-open wash. And it stays open for about a good mile as you begin to hike in. The side walls are steep and around 6 feet high, but there are some places you can scramble out if you need to.
And as you walk along, as I did, you begin to wonder just where the slots are? But as you track on up into the canyon itself walls finally begin to get closer and closer and closer until finally you are into the slots.

I’ve been to Antelope Canyon both upper and lower and each slot canyon has a unique character and attraction. Although Water Hole Canyon is no Antelope Canyon, it too has its own beauty and character. It really is a beautiful place.

This particular photograph was taken from the beginning of the slots where the canyon walls narrow sufficiently enough that can you pass through with each side of the canyon within arm reach. And it does narrow more as you go further in.

Among the slots of Water Hole Canyon near Page, Arizona.

Visiting a Slot Canyon unique and singular experience. Carved by the forces of water, slot canyons are amazing and with the right conditions and light, are beautiful and colorful with the all the reflected light that makes the red rock seemingly glow. You gain a greater appreciation of the forces of nature, especially the forces of water, as you walk through a slot canyon. And Water Holes Canyon does not disappoint!

Back in 1982, my Air Force roommate was in desperate need of some cash, and he had a camera. And I was in the market for a camera as I had TDY (Temporary Duty) orders for Cyprus and was looking for a good camera to take with me. So over some beers and some negotiations with my roommate (and a few hundred dollars later), I found that I had become the owner of a brand spanking new Canon AE-1 camera with an assortment of lens, including a Canon 50mm, a 35mm lens, as well as a telephoto lens. Fast forward to today, and I am now an owner of a Canon 5D Mark II (looking to upgrade, but waiting to see if Sony comes out with a 'A9' before I upgrade) and a bunch of Canon glass and I am primarily a landscape photographer. Yea, that means that I get up before the sun rises and am out after the sun sets. Makes for interesting times! Thank you for joining me on this photographic journey and hope to hear from you!
