Meet Dave

My name is David Coté

For me, the world of photography is about light and color, which opens up new vistas in our imaginations and shows us the beauty of the world.

My Style

My photography is more of an interpretation of a location than a description. So my style moves between photo realism to more artistic and interpretive landscapes and fine art, emphasizing the color and the light I find in my subjects. My artworks are inspired by the places I visit, and are noted for the light, color, and techniques – from black & white processing, vintage photos, and a creative perspective – that I employ. And of course, most importantly, the personalities of the locations I photograph!

As a landscape photographer, the majority of the photographs I create are those that were taken during two parts of the day: the Golden Hour, the hours just before sunset or just after sunrise, and the Blue Hour, the time either just before sunrise or just after sunset. I find that the color of the light really impacts the subject and allows me to chase after both the amazing colors and the beautiful quality of the light.

My Passion

Back in 1982, my Air Force roommate was in desperate need of some cash, and he had a camera. And I was in the market for a camera as I had TDY (Temporary Duty) orders for Cyprus and was looking for a good camera to take with me. So over some beers and some negotiations with my roommate (and a few hundred dollars later), I found that I had become the owner of a brand spanking new Canon AE-1 camera with an assortment of lens, including a Canon 50mm, a 35mm lens, as well as a telephoto lens. And my love for photography was reborn.Fast forward to today, and I am now an owner of a Canon 5D Mark II (looking to upgrade, but can’t make up my mind!) and a bunch of Canon glass and I am primarily a landscape and travel photographer. Yea, that means that I get up before the sun rises and am out after the sun sets. And depending on my subjects, I create photography all during the day. Makes for interesting times! Thank you for joining me on this photographic journey and hope to hear from you!

In my time as a photographer, I have worked in many photographic genres, only to find myself coming back to landscapes.

For me, landscapes are the purest expression of the beauty of the world around us, and I strive to capture that beauty.  Many of the collectors of my art have stated that they feel like they can simply “step into” my photographs and “be there.”

Although in the past several years, I have also expanded into travel photography. I often find myself traveling and I enjoy capturing scenes of the places I visit, always with the goal to be able to present my photography to the viewer as if they too could “be there.”

And that is my goal with my art — I want to capture the “there” and bring it “here” before you.  I work hard to transport the viewer to a different place, a different reality – in another words – to a different world and place from our every day existence.  Many of us work in mundane places — offices, cubicles, warehouses, store aisles — in short places where refreshing beauty and tranquility are difficult to find, let alone experience.

I use my photography to provide a respite from such an existence.  I find that nature paints the world with such a beautiful palette, using such vibrant colors and such boldness that I struggle to capture what I see before me.

Ansel Adams, one of the greatest landscape photographers of the 20th century once wrote “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”  With every press of the shutter on my camera, the resulting photograph is an expression of my love for the world, and it all builds upon itself to shape my vision of the final work of art that I make.

My art ultimately is a reflection of the peace and solitude I often feel when I travel to these beautiful places.  And always I leave these places having been blessed by the colors, the scene, the sheer beauty of the natural world.

And today, I share that gift, that gem, that treasure with you!

Reach out to me and I will get back with you as soon as I can. If I am traveling, it may be a day or two, as I am often in locations with little to no cell phone service!
