My Photograph of the Day: Senatvs Popvlvsqve Romanvs

A new feature of 2018, a photograph of the day from my archives. Today's photograph is the front columns from the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum in Rome. The phrase, Senatvs Popvlvsqve Romanvs is translated as "The Senate and the People of Rome."

The remains of the Temple of Saturn, Roman Forum, Rome, Italy.

It had been 30 some odd years since I had last visited the Roman Forum.  It is pretty much as I remembered it.  And as I walked along the ruins I could imagine the ancient Romans conducting their daily business within the hallowed halls of the basilicas and the temples that line the Forum. One of my favorite photographs from the Forum is this one of the ruins of the Temple of Saturn, the oldest existent temple in the Forum.

It was a sunny day, and we had other plans, so I had to make this shot work for me.  So instead of showing the ground, I went with this composition, and moved so that the front architrave would be at an angle.  The sun is actually right above the right side of the architrave, so I had to move to put the sun out of the frame.

I shot this photograph with a Sony A7RII with the Sony FE 24-240mm F/3.5-5.6 OSS lens set at 41mm.  I took the shot with the camera set at f/16, 1/80sec shutter and an ISO of 100.

I processed the photograph in Lightroom, and did a roundtrip to Photoshop where I removed dust spots, and did further processing in Nik ColorEfx Pro which is kept as a layer set to around 20% opacity to provide a little contrast due to the position of the sun directly above.  I love this photograph, perhaps mostly because of sentimental reasons, but nonetheless, I do love it.
