My Photograph of the Day: Hoodoos

Spending time at Bryce Canyon National Park is magical, especially if you can catch the first rays of the morning light as it lights up the hoodoos, as in this artwork.

Early morning light on the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.

My daughter and I drove to Sunrise Overlook along the rim of Bryce Canyon.  It was still dark and forbidding, and it was cold and windy.

So windy in fact I almost couldn’t setup my tripod as the wind was whipping around me as if in some kind of race.  And I was concerned for my camera sitting on top of a tripod I was holding on at times with both hands.

My daughter gave up and walked back to the car, she was cold.  I was cold as well, but I knew that if I was lucky I’d be able to get the early morning light on the red and orange hoodoos below me in the dark.

So I stayed and waited. And as I waited the light began to turn, and the it grew lighter, and the hoodoos began to come out from the darkness.  I confirmed that it was indeed cloudy, so began to be unsure about standing on the rim hoping for some light on the hoodoos.  But I stayed, and after what seemed like forever shivering in the cold wind, I was blessed with a break in the clouds.

And I was able to get this shot.  The light was good for about a minute before the clouds rolled in and covered the rising sun.  I shot this with my telephoto, everything I had read spoke of the detail of the hoodoos and how getting closeup views gave one the best photographs.  I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do. It hangs in my office, I love the colors of the hoodoos as they lit up and went from reddish brown to orange.
