My Photograph of the Day: Big Dune

Big Dune is quite the place. Located about a couple of miles off the highway in Nevada, you first see it way off in the distance. But it's charm become apparent as you arrive at Big Dune. And this work of art is My Photograph of the Day!

A black and white treatment of BIg Dune in Nevada.

Driving along Nevada state route 95 heading towards Beatty, one can see off in the distance on the left a series of seeming large sand dunes. These are the dunes called “Big Dune.”

There are a number of sand dunes that surround a large central dune, hence the name. It can be reached after a two mile or so ride down a dusty dirt road, full of sandy potholes.

The day that I arrived to photograph the area the wind was howling. It was around 30 miles a hour with occasional gusts of 45. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to capture anything with all the blowing sand.

I left my car and with my jacket (thankfully it had a hood), I headed towards the dunes. It was a slog, as walking in sand usually is, and I finally made it to the base of some of the dunes. I had envisioned capturing several dunes together; to give the sense of the expansiveness of the desert, and these dunes didn’t disappoint me.

I had decided that I couldn’t use my tripod or change lens due to the blowing wind, so all the photographs I took at Big Dune were all hand held. As I stood there bracing myself against the blowing sand, it was surrealistic, the blowing sand pelting my jacket with these grains of sand as if I was myself being sandblasted!

But in spite of the wind and the blowing sand, I still managed to create some wonderful prints. Of which this is one of my favorites. I love the sinuousness of the flowing sand from dune to dune, the shapes and the shadows are what attracted me to the dunes in the first place. And this art piece does that that sensuousness of the curves and the shadows.
